Guest report by Emma, a Tøyen parkrun visitor from Reading in the UK.
Saturday 8th February 2020
Tøyen parkrun’s 106th event took place on a cold and rather bleak morning, but it was made very warm by the welcome and friendliness of all the runners and wonderful volunteers.
I am from the U.K. This was my third visit to Norway but my first time to do a parkrun in Oslo!
I have been staying in Stokke, which is approximately 100km from the centre of Oslo. I got up at 0530 and left at 0700. We drove into Oslo from Stokke and arrived by 0830.
Having done my homework, I knew that the start of parkrun was by the statue in Tøyen Park. Having parked near the Munch Museum, we waited in the car for a while before walking up to the statue. Gradually more and more runners arrived and at about 0925 the run director, Helen, gave the very clear run brief. Every run brief the world over contains the same information, yet every one is also quite unique. Helen welcomed the 14 first time runners and also welcomed tourists - there were a number of tourist runners from the U.K.
We set off on time at 0930. Tøyen parkrun is a 4-lap clockwise course, mostly on tarmac pavements, starting on a gentle downhill. The course has some undulations, with a fairly long upward incline towards the end of each lap. There were very friendly marshals throughout the course, always smiling and cheering runners on.
I found the course quite tough but was delighted with my finish time, and absolutely loved being a part of the Norwegian parkrun family for the morning! I shall definitely be back again sometime!
This week 73 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 14 were first timers and 8 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 9 different clubs took part.
The event was made possible by 12 volunteers:
Emma GRENSIDE • Sharon QUINCE • Steven QUINCE • Erik KOLBJØRNSEN • Helen RIST • Ole-Alexander OPDALSHEI • Bjarne BRENNA • Harald GLIEBE • Line Berre HANEBERG • Beverley J. H. GRYTING • Carina WINT • Andreas GRITZBACH
